The 2010 Boston Marathon is fast approaching. On April 19th, two outstanding individuals will run 26.2 miles on behalf of Family Reach Foundation, helping to raise funds for families tackling a very different kind of challenge. Nick Carey of Winchester, Massachusetts, and Hector Martinez of Rivervale, New Jersey, are committed to raising thousands of dollars for families facing the emotional and financial challenges of cancer.
Throughout the coming months, this website will be dedicated to the efforts of these athletes as they prepare for the long road ahead and raise much needed funds for the families we touch. We hope you will continue to visit this site and support their efforts and our mission. Just check out Nick and Hector’s individual pages to make a donation and give them a boost of energy as they strive to reach their goals! As always, thank you for your kindness and generosity.

About Family Reach
Family Reach is a 501(c)3 organization providing financial relief and emotional support to families fighting cancer, helping them to keep their homes, buy their groceries and pay for basic necessities as they try to return a loved one to good heath.
Since 2003, Family Reach has generated over $2 million in gross contributions through annual events, special programs, individual donations and corporate partners to fulfill its mission. Monies have been distributed to more than 1,000 families with a child, young adult or parent fighting cancer to help pay for critical non-medical and medical expenses. Family Reach now serves the needs of families through several prominent hospitals on the East and West Coasts, including Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, Sloan-Kettering in New York, Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, and Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego.
Become a Reach Runner, Rider or Racer
Family Reach invites athletes to join our mission by becoming an official Reach Runner, Rider or Racer. These programs have raised monies for scores of families, and have created a growing network of Family Reach enthusiasts. The programs are easy to initiate and we’ll help you set yourself up and move toward the goals you set. Families fighting cancer will be forever grateful! Hope, Age 6
Hope was diagnosed with standard risk acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) three years ago, but recently relapsed for the first time. Until now, Hope had received care in Rhode Island, but in the summer was admitted to the hospital in Boston for a donor stem cell transplant (SCT). She is expected to remain in the hospital for at least six more weeks. On discharge, Hope and her mom will spend at least two weeks at the Ronald McDonald House (RMH) while she is closely followed in the outpatient clinic. Her mother is a single mom who takes care of Hope and her 16-year-old sister. Her mom is a teacher for the Head Start program and has been on unpaid leave the past few months due to Hope’s illness and required care. The family has applied for SSI and their application is pending. They are in serious need of financial assistance.

Clay, Age 8
Clay is an 8 year-old boy being treated for a brain tumor that was diagnosed in the spring. Clay has undergone eight tough weeks of radiation treatments and is currently going through chemotherapy for an indefinite period of time. He lives with this mom, step-dad, and three younger siblings. His mom is unable to work, as all of her time and attention are focused on caring for Clay and the other siblings. His step-dad works, but has very modest income. The parents would be most grateful if Family Reach could grant them funds for their next rent payment.

Nelson, Age 24
Nelson was diagnosed with osteogenic sarcoma in the spring, and at the time of his diagnosis, he and his wife were expecting their first child. The family now has a two-month old baby to care for while Nelson undergoes treatment. He was working as a security engineer prior to his illness, and with his savings, he purchased his family’s first home before being diagnosed. With the financial pressures of his new home, Nelson has very little savings to support the family while being out of work. His treatment will occur for a year and he is in the process of applying for Social Security. They are in desperate need of financial assistance in the short term.
