Nick Carey

The Boston Marathon won’t be Nick Carey’s first great feat of athleticism, having completed his first Ironman in November in Panama City, Florida – a demanding triathlon requiring a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike race, and a full 26.2 mile marathon. A self-employed business owner in the financial services sector, Nick resides in Winchester, Massachusetts, with his wife and two sons.

“I have been fortunate to be a part of two prior fundraisers for Family Reach and really believe in the people and their mission. By running in the Boston Marathon for Family Reach, I am hoping I can raise enough money to provide a little bit of relief to the families affected by cancer in their everyday lives. If I can eliminate some of the hardship and allow the families to focus on treatment, that would be a victory.”

Family Reach helps families through relationships with major hospitals on East and West Coasts, including Sloan-Kettering and New York Presbyterian in New York, Dana-Farber and Mass General in Boston, Robert Wood Johnson in New Jersey, UCSF and Lucile Packard in California, and many others.

A Family in Great Need:  Parents Striving to Save their Baby Boy

At just four months-old, Brandon was diagnosed with brain cancer after an MRI revealed that a tumor was causing his erratic eye movement.   Brandon’s family lived in South Carolina and immediately packed their bags, sold most of their possessions, including their car, and moved to Boston to get the best treatment for their baby.  Brandon’s parents, Rocky and Janet, have six children, two of whom are young adults.  For now, the family’s 7 and 6 year-old are still in South Carolina living with the two older children, and their 3 year-old daughter and Brandon are here in Boston.

The family just rented an apartment in Medford and are traveling back and forth to the hospital.  It took all of their savings to get to Boston and secure an apartment.  With both parents temporarily out of work, they are in extreme financial trouble.   The family now needs assistance with the down payment for a car in order to travel back and forth from the hospital, and for Brandon’s father to find work.  Brandon is about to start a grueling 60 weeks of chemotherapy treatment.

Family Reach, with the passion and help of people like Nick Carey, will do everything we can to support Brandon’s family.  Please join in and help us by donating toward Nick’s efforts as he runs the Boston Marathon.  Brandon’s family and others will be forever grateful for your kindness.

Spotlight:  A Tribute to Those Who Inspire Us

Pat Kelly, former NFL player and Managing Director at Bear Stearns, passed away from cancer in 2003. Through the NFL and his own battle with cancer, Pat frequently visited pediatric wards at hospitals across the country and saw first-hand the devastating impact that seemingly small expenses, such as cab fare and groceries, had on the families of the patients.

“Pat recognized long ago that it was the everyday bills that were the last straw to families who were already struggling with such incredible emotional and financial hardships. He opened my eyes to the issue, and I promised him I would find a way to help.”

Carla Tardif, Director of Development at Family Reach.
